Religion--First graders will learn about God as their Father and Jesus as our friend and Savior. We will talk about the sacraments, commandments, and review and learn new prayers--Our Father, Hail Mary, Morning Offering, etc.
Reading--This will be our second year implementing a new series-McGraw-Hill Reading Wonders. It's an amazing series with so much to offer. I especially like the interactive lessons and activities. The kiddos really enjoy that as well. We will differentiate short vowels, long vowels, blending words, phonics, high-frequency words, and putting all that together to eventually read as independently as possible.
Grammar/Spelling--There will be weekly spelling lists that coordinate with our story of the week. Grammar will find students learning basics such as punctuation and capitalization, parts of speech, identifying complete sentences, writing paragraphs, etc.
Social Studies--We usually do this twice a week using Time for Kids, Discovery Education, map skills, directions, states, cities, towns, etc.
Science--Mrs. Johnson, the kindergarten teacher, will teach science this year. She will teach twice a week as I teach the kindergartners Religion. First grade science focuses on plants, animals, our senses, and more.
Specials--In addition to the above, first graders will also participate in Art, P.E., Music, and Computer.
